On December 3, 2009, Juan Rodriguez, a 39-year-old Hispanic man, was tragically shot and killed in his northwest Harris County neighborhood in Houston, Texas. According to his ex-wife, Olga Contreras, Rodriguez was awakened by a gunshot around 2 a.m. and went outside with his handgun after hearing the commotion. He was attempting to intervene in a robbery that had just occurred at his neighbors' home.
Unfortunately, Rodriguez was met with a barrage of bullets, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to his neck, face, legs, and chest. He was pronounced dead at Ben Taub General Hospital.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident and believed the robbery was drug-related. Sgt. Ben Beall of the homicide division stated that Rodriguez was trying to do a good thing by confronting the robbers, but the suspects fled the scene before deputies arrived.
