Jillian Michelle Smith, a 24-year-old female police officer with the Arlington Police Department, tragically lost her life on December 28, 2010. Officer Smith was fatally shot while responding to a domestic assault call at the Arbrook Park Apartment Complex in Arlington, Texas. She had been on the force for only 10 months and had recently completed her field training.
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Smith was inside the apartment taking a report from the female victim when the male
subject, Barnes Samuel Nettles, unexpectedly returned. Nettles opened fire, and Officer Smith heroically positioned herself to shield the victim's 11-year-old daughter, saving the girl but receiving fatal gunshot wounds in the process. Nettles then chased the woman to a bedroom, where he murdered her before taking his own life.
The incident resulted in the deaths of Officer Smith, Kimberly DeShay Carter , and Barnes Samuel Nettles. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner determined that Nettles died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Carter's cause of death was homicide. The 11-year-old girl managed to escape to a neighboring apartment unit and was unharmed.
Officer Smith's dedication to her community and her bravery in the face of danger were widely recognized. She had a strong interest in law enforcement from a young age and graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Her funeral was held on January 4, 2011, and she was remembered as an excellent person and police officer.
The tragic events of that night highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the profound impact their sacrifices have on their communities. Officer Smith's legacy continues to be honored by those who knew her and the Arlington Police Department.
