Constable Brian David Bachmann, aged 41, was fatally shot on August 13, 2012, while serving an eviction notice at a home in College Station, Texas. Bachmann, a dedicated law enforcement officer with over 20 years of service, was the Brazos County Constable for Precinct 1. He was born on November 29, 1970, in Minot, North Dakota, and was of Caucasian ethnicity.
The tragic incident occurred when Bachmann arrived at the residence of Thomas Alton Caffall III to serve a court notice regarding
unpaid rent. Upon Bachmann's arrival, Caffall opened fire, fatally wounding Bachmann. In the ensuing chaos, Bachmann's .40-caliber SIG Sauer P226 pistol was stolen by Caffall, who then continued shooting, injuring a bystander and engaging in a prolonged shootout with responding officers. The shootout lasted approximately 30 minutes and resulted in the deaths of Bachmann and a civilian, Chris Northcliffe, as well as injuries to several other officers and bystanders.
Caffall, who was also shot and killed during the shootout, had a history of legal troubles and was reportedly known to have a volatile temperament. The incident led to a significant law enforcement response, with multiple agencies converging on the scene to neutralize the threat. The aftermath of the shooting saw the community come together to honor Bachmann's memory, including renaming a local sports park in his honor.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Caffall had an arsenal of weapons in his home, including a Vz 58 Tactical Sporter rifle, a Mosin–Nagant M91/30 rifle, and a PSL rifle with a scope. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the importance of community support in times of tragedy.
Bachmann is survived by his wife, Donna, and their children, Sam, Amanda, Bradley, and Caitlyn, as well as his parents, Bradley and Carmen Bachmann, and his siblings. His death was a profound loss to the community and the law enforcement family, and his legacy continues to be remembered and honored.
