In the afternoon hours of September 10, 2009, 18-year-old Cameron Dion Washington was with three other young people on the front porch of a home near 54th and Bellefontaine in Kansas City, Missouri. An unknown assailant, or possibly multiple individuals, approached and opened fire on the group. All four individuals, who were around the ages of 18 and 20, were struck by the gunfire.
Friends of the victims transported them to Research Medical Center for medical attention. It was at the hospital that law enforcement was notified of the multiple shooting victims. Cameron Washington succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The other three victims were treated for what were described as minor gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting remained open, with authorities seeking information from the public. The surviving victims were unable to provide police with any details about the suspect or suspects responsible for the attack. In the days following the shooting, family, friends, and community members gathered for a vigil to honor Cameron's memory and to plead for an end to the violence that claimed the young Northeast High School student's life. At that time, the case was still unsolved, and no arrests had been made.
