Maoye Sun, a 50-year-old man of Chinese ethnicity, was tragically killed along with his wife Mei Xie, 49, and their two sons, 9-year-old Timothy and 7-year-old Titus, in their Cypress, TX home on January 24, 2014. The family was found shot to death in their home on January 30, 2014. The case remained unsolved for nearly nine years until Feng Lu, a 58-year-old coworker of Maoye Sun, was arrested in California on September 11, 2022, and charged with capital murder.

The motive behind the killings was revealed to be a work-related conflict. Feng Lu was upset after being passed over for a promotion and believed that Maoye Sun had made derogatory comments about him to their coworkers. According to court documents, Lu asked Sun for a recommendation for the promotion, but when he didn't receive it, he became enraged. Investigators believe that Lu purchased a gun on January 23, 2014, and used it to kill the Sun family two days later.

The case gained significant attention in Houston's Chinese community, which expressed frustration over the lack of information and the long delay in finding the perpetrator. The arrest of Feng Lu brought some closure to the community, although the tragic loss of the Sun family remains a somber reminder of the impact of workplace conflicts.
