On July 29, 2024, 38-year-old Clifton Lee Johnson was fatally shot in Cypress, Texas, while visiting a female friend at her apartment on Cypress Plaza Parkway. Johnson, a musician from Orlando, Florida, had recently arrived in Houston.
The woman had moved to the apartment to distance herself from her estranged husband, Kerry Cunningham. On the day of the incident, Cunningham arrived at the apartment and attempted to break in by kicking the door and using a screwdriver.
Once inside, he confronted Johnson, who was hiding in a bedroom. An argument ensued, culminating in Cunningham allegedly shooting Johnson in the face.
First responders found Cunningham administering aid to Johnson upon arrival. Johnson was transported to Memorial Hermann Downtown Hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. Cunningham was detained at the scene, interviewed by investigators, and subsequently charged with capital murder. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.
Johnson was remembered as a talented musician who had shared his music with many across Central Florida. His family and friends expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death, highlighting his genuine and soulful nature.
As of August 2024, Cunningham remained in custody with a bond set at $200,000. Johnson's family continues to seek justice and answers regarding the circumstances that led to his death.
