On June 25, 2014, a fatal incident occurred at the Avistar at Chase Hill apartment complex near the University of Texas at San Antonio. At approximately 2:30 a.m., two individuals, identified as 20-year-old Mikhael Moore and 21-year-old Joseph Kirschberg, forcibly entered an apartment by kicking in the door. Once inside, they demanded property from the occupants.
In response, resident Robert Maddera Payne retreated to a locked bedroom and contacted his friends, including 19-year-old Zachary Manciu, for assistance.
As the situation escalated, one of the intruders attempted to breach Payne's bedroom door. Payne, armed with a shotgun, fired through the door, resulting in the deaths of both Mikhael Moore and Zachary Manciu. Moore was pronounced dead at the scene, while Manciu succumbed to his injuries later that morning at University Hospital. Authorities later revealed that Kirschberg fled the scene during the shootout.
Following the incident, law enforcement officials arrested Joseph Kirschberg on charges of capital murder. Investigations indicated that Kirschberg had prior acquaintance with the apartment's residents, and the motive behind the home invasion was linked to a drug-related dispute. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus emphasized that the crime was not a random act, highlighting the existing connections between the involved parties.
The tragic event underscored the dangers associated with criminal activities and the potential for unintended consequences. Both Moore and Manciu lost their lives in the confrontation, leaving their families and the community to grapple with the aftermath of the violence.
