On February 28, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas, 45-year-old John Salazar, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot during an incident with his roommate, 29-year-old Eric Gildelamadrid. The two were reportedly engaged in a discussion about the comparative speed of a gun versus a knife at their apartment located in the 9500 block of Perrin Beitel near Sun Gate Drive. During this conversation, Gildelamadrid allegedly pointed a firearm at Salazar, despite multiple warnings to handle the weapon cautiously.
Believing the safety was engaged, Gildelamadrid unintentionally discharged the gun, striking Salazar in the stomach. Emergency responders transported Salazar to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Gildelamadrid was found outside the apartment with his hands raised in surrender. He was subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter. Authorities set his bond at $20,000.
John David Salazar was born on June 21, 1970, in Port Washington, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his father, Jose D. Salazar. He is survived by his mother, Linda Salazar; two brothers, James Long Jr. and Jerome Long; and his nephew, James Long III.
The tragic incident highlights the dangers associated with improper firearm handling and the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent such accidents.
