Deandre Terrell Thompson, a 20-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on October 22, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. Deandre was at his Northeast Side apartment on O'Connor Road, spending the evening playing video games and watching TV with a friend. Unbeknownst to him, his friend was secretly coordinating with two men, Ryan Hardwick and Demond Franklin, to rob Deandre of money and drugs.
As Deandre and his friend were about to leave the apartment to pick up food, Hardwick and Franklin forced their way inside. One of the men opened fire, striking Deandre twice in the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
In the aftermath of the incident, both Ryan Hardwick and Demond Franklin were arrested and charged with capital murder. The friend, who had been in communication with the robbers, initially told police that he heard gunshots and fell to the floor, covering his head. He later admitted to setting up Deandre, his marijuana supplier, to be robbed. In return for his testimony, the friend pleaded to a reduced charge of aggravated assault. Demond Franklin was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Ryan Hardwick, who was also arrested in connection with the killing, was awaiting trial.
