Christopher A. Harris Jr., a 30-year-old male from Kansas City, Missouri, was the victim of a targeted and violent homicide that occurred on the evening of March 14, 2018. The incident unfolded in the driveway of a residence in the 16600 block of East 28th Place in Independence, Missouri, where Harris had driven to drop off his eight-year-old daughter at her mother's home. Unbeknownst to him, his movements were being monitored in real-time by a rival through a GPS tracking device secretly attached to his vehicle.
As Harris arrived at the residence, a vehicle pulled in behind him, blocking his exit. Three men—later identified as Lester E. “Lucky” Brown, Michael Young, and Ronell Pearson—had followed him to the location. Brown and Young exited their vehicle and opened fire on Harris's car. Realizing the immediate danger to his child, Harris screamed, 'My daughter is in the car!' and desperately tried to shield her from the hail of bullets. He managed to usher the girl safely to the front door of the house, but as he attempted to flee, he was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. In a final act of brutality, the gunman stood over the wounded father and fired additional rounds, killing him just steps away from where his daughter had escaped to safety.
The subsequent investigation by the Independence Police Department and the FBI's Kansas City Field Office uncovered a sophisticated plot driven by a dispute over territory and proceeds from marijuana distribution. Detectives discovered a magnetic GPS tracker affixed to the undercarriage of Harris's vehicle, which became a pivotal piece of evidence. Forensic analysis traced the device to an account registered to Brown, and digital evidence revealed that the conspirators had been cyberstalking Harris for months. They had placed multiple trackers on his vehicles and sent him threatening messages via Snapchat, including photographs of the tracking devices and demands for extortion payments.
Lester E. Brown, identified as the ringleader, was arrested and charged in federal court. The investigation revealed that the murder was the culmination of a long-standing feud and that Brown had previously bragged about the killing. In May 2023, a federal jury convicted Brown of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking resulting in death, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was subsequently sentenced to life in federal prison plus an additional 15 years. His accomplices, Michael Young and Ronell Pearson, both pleaded guilty to their roles in the conspiracy and the stalking that led to Harris's death, receiving prison sentences of 15 years and 5 years, respectively.
