Daveon Jasiri Jordan, an 18-year-old male student at Stevens High School in San Antonio, Texas, was tragically shot and killed on February 16, 2015. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. in a vacant lot at 1215 Longmont Street. Another student, Roderick Lee, 18, was also injured in the shooting but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of a failed drug deal.
Daveon and his friend Roderick had arranged to purchase marijuana from a dealer they knew from high school. However, the situation escalated when the dealer suspected a setup and called his cousin, Edward Arocha, 19, to join the transaction. During the exchange, a confrontation ensued, and Arocha opened fire, hitting both Daveon and Roderick multiple times. Daveon was pronounced dead at the scene, while Roderick was taken to the hospital.
Edward Arocha was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Daveon's death. He was taken into custody without incident at an apartment on Highway 16 by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Arocha was held at the Bexar County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
The community was deeply affected by Daveon's death, and a vigil was held in his memory at Columbia baseball fields on East Ellison Drive. Hundreds of people attended, releasing balloons and wearing shirts with Daveon's picture to honor his memory. Daveon's mother, Katrina Byrd, expressed her heartbreak and frustration over her son's untimely death, emphasizing how much he was loved and cherished by his friends and teammates.
The case brought attention to the dangers of drug-related violence and the impact it has on families and communities. Despite the tragic circumstances, Daveon's legacy lives on through the love and support of those who knew him.
