On the night of July 6, 2010, violence erupted in the 2400 block of Myrtle Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. 43-year-old Exiquio Martinez, a male resident of the area, was present at the location alongside another man when the situation unfolded. It was approximately 11:50 p.m. when the two individuals were outside and became the target of a confrontation that would quickly escalate into a life-threatening encounter.
According to reports from the Kansas City Police Department, Martinez
and his companion were approached by three unknown individuals. The interaction turned hostile as one of the suspects produced a handgun and aimed it directly at Martinez's stomach. In a desperate attempt to disarm the gunman, the second victim grabbed the weapon, leading to a struggle. During the chaos, Martinez attempted to flee the scene by running across the street to safety. However, one of the suspects opened fire, striking him.
Officers arrived at the scene to find both men suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. While the second victim survived his injuries, which were described as non-life-threatening, Exiquio Martinez succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the medical facility. The investigation revealed that the suspects were three black males who fled the area on foot immediately after the shooting, heading westbound on 25th Street. Despite the collection of evidence and rewards offered by Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest, the case has remained unsolved with no suspects taken into custody in the years following the murder.
