Jennifer Cruz, a 27-year-old woman from Lubbock, Texas, tragically lost her life on April 18, 2015. She was fatally shot four times at her home in the 5000 block of 44th Street. Her new boyfriend, Albert "Bo" Martinez, aged 30, was also shot once and killed during the incident. The perpetrator, Jennifer's ex-husband David Ricardo Carrillo, was arrested shortly after the crime.
David Carrillo was found guilty of capital murder for the double slaying.
During the trial, it was revealed that Carrillo had made threats against Jennifer and her new boyfriend prior to the incident. He had even discussed his intentions to kill them with his former lover, Jennifer Sustaita, who testified against him. Carrillo broke into the home through a window armed with a .40 caliber handgun and confronted the couple while they were sleeping. The 911 call made by Jennifer during the attack recorded her pleading for Carrillo to put the gun down and stop.
Carrillo confessed to the shootings after hearing the 911 call and led the police to the location where he had buried the gun. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court proceedings were emotionally charged, with family members of the victims expressing their grief and anger towards Carrillo.
