Toris Deandre Knight, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically killed in a shooting on August 5, 2015, in El Paso, Texas. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the 4000 block of Van Buren Avenue near Monroe Avenue and Cassidy Road in the Lower Dyer area of Central El Paso. Knight was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Knight had a history of legal troubles,
including drug-related arrests and involvement with the Bloods street gang. In 2009, he was among more than a dozen members and associates of the Bloods arrested in a crackdown by the FBI and police. The gang was suspected of being involved in street-level sales of crack cocaine and the club drug Ecstasy. Knight pleaded guilty in 2010 to a charge of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison. He had also been charged with several misdemeanors and felonies, including a July 5 arrest on suspicion of drug possession, evading arrest, and traffic warrants.
The investigation into Knight's death revealed that the shooting occurred during a fight outside the Player's Lounge, a bar located at 4024 Dyer Street. The altercation escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Knight. The police investigation initially did not result in any arrests, and the suspect remained at large for some time.
However, on August 6, 2015, El Paso Police arrested 25-year-old Cortez Devonte Thomas in connection with the murder. Thomas was charged with murder and held on a half-million-dollar bond. The investigation continued, and another individual, Paul E. Johnson, was also implicated in the crime. Johnson was convicted in 2017 of murder and aggravated assault in the shooting death of Knight. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the crime.
The case against Thomas proceeded to trial, where witnesses testified about the events leading up to the shooting. One witness, Shannon Walker, testified that he was standing next to Thomas when Thomas fired his gun. Walker also stated that Thomas admitted to firing his gun and that Johnson admitted to shooting Knight. Thomas faced charges of engaging in organized criminal activity in addition to the murder charge.
