Darrell Lamond Allen, a 43-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 10, 2015, in Temple, Texas. Chief Allen, who had dedicated 21 years to law enforcement, was serving as the Chief of Police for the Marlin Police Department at the time of his death. His career in law enforcement began in 1994, and he had served in various capacities across multiple departments, including the Galveston County Sheriff's Department, Alvin Independent School District, Hitchcock Police
Department, Danberry Police Department, Arcola Police Department, and Precinct 6 Constable's Office in Houston.
On November 1, 2015, Chief Allen was working a secondary employment assignment at a club located at 301 East Avenue B in Temple, Texas. During this assignment, he attempted to arrest a subject who was creating a disturbance at approximately 1:20 am. As Chief Allen struggled with the subject, the man produced a handgun and shot Chief Allen in the face. Despite being immediately transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Chief Allen succumbed to his injuries ten days later.
The suspect, who was arrested at the scene by another Marlin police officer and a Temple Police Department officer, was later sentenced to 95 years in prison for the murder of Chief Allen. The trial and subsequent sentencing took place on August 24, 2017, bringing some measure of justice to the tragic incident.
Chief Allen's death was a significant loss to the law enforcement community and his family. He was survived by his wife and children, who continue to honor his legacy and dedication to public service. His passing not only highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers but also underscored the importance of their commitment to protecting and serving their communities.
