In the late hours of a Friday evening in Camden, New Jersey, the city's ShotSpotter system detected the sound of gunfire, leading police to a grim discovery in an alleyway in the Fairview section. There, on May 20, 2016, they found 24-year-old James Rhodes of East Orange, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later, becoming the city's 19th homicide victim of the year.
