James Allen Rodriguez, a 59-year-old Hispanic man, was tragically shot and killed on his family's ranch near D'Hanis, Texas, on November 21, 2015. Rodriguez, who often enjoyed deer hunting on his property, encountered Shane Outlaw, a 26-year-old man who Rodriguez believed to be a poacher. Rodriguez called his brother-in-law, Mike Mollere, for backup, but both men were shot by Outlaw. Mollere survived his injuries, but Rodriguez did not.
Outlaw, who had stolen a pickup truck earlier that day, overpowered Rodriguez and took his hunting rifle, using it to shoot both Rodriguez and Mollere. After the shooting, Outlaw stole Rodriguez's Hummer, which he later crashed, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. Outlaw was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. He remains in custody without bond.
