Gilberto Garcia Garces, a 44-year-old Hispanic man from Progreso, Texas, tragically died on April 6, 2016, in Mercedes, Texas. His body was discovered the following day near a levee south of Expressway 83. The investigation revealed that Garces was kidnapped from a tire shop in Mercedes and taken to the levee, where he was brutally murdered.
The case involved multiple suspects.
Adalberto Mosqueda Guardado and Ramiro Garcia Lopez were both convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Mosqueda's trial revealed that Garces owed nearly $40,000 to Garcia Lopez, who owned the tire shop. During the kidnapping, Garces was beaten, and a struggle ensued, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma. Two other suspects, Sergio Medrano and Mauricio Vidal, remain fugitives.
The investigation was extensive, involving the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers. Despite the convictions, the search for Medrano and Vidal continues, as authorities believe they played a significant role in Garces' death.
