Adoniya M. Spiller, a 24-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on October 8, 2016, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred at Spiller's residence, where he was shot multiple times by his childhood friend, Marcus Renard Coleman, also 24 years old and an African American male. The two friends, both young fathers, had an argument over a small amount of marijuana found in the breezeway of Spiller's apartment.
During the altercation, Coleman, a documented member of the gang 5th Ward Circle, told Spiller to "put the baby down" before shooting him in the neck and abdomen. Spiller's 2-year-old daughter was standing next to him, and he was holding Coleman's newborn daughter in a baby carrier at the time of the shooting. Spiller succumbed to his injuries the following day at the hospital.
Coleman, who was out on bail for a felony charge of felon in possession of a firearm at the time of the murder, fled to Louisiana after the shooting. He was later extradited back to Harris County, Texas, and charged with Spiller's murder. Despite being released on bail multiple times, Coleman repeatedly failed to appear in court and was rearrested on several occasions for domestic violence and possession of cocaine. The case lingered on the docket due to Coleman's continuous criminal activities while out on bond, which postponed the trial.
In April 2023, after a five-day trial, Marcus Renard Coleman was convicted of the murder of Adoniya Spiller and sentenced to 45 years in prison. The Harris County District Attorney's Office stated that Coleman would have to serve at least half of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole. The conviction and sentencing provided some closure to Spiller's family, who had endured years of delays and uncertainty due to Coleman's repeated offenses and absences from court.
