On December 16, 2016, Karla Marizol Carias, a 22-year-old woman of Hispanic ethnicity, was tragically killed in southeast Houston, Texas. She was shot by car burglars while confronting them outside her boyfriend's apartment at the Tropicana Apartments on Kingsway Drive. Carias was not the intended target, but was fatally shot once by one of the burglars in a getaway car as they fled the scene.
The incident occurred around midnight when Carias' boyfriend and his father heard someone
breaking into her car. They went outside to investigate, and as the burglars drove away, one of them leaned out of the window and fired a shot, hitting Carias. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, the Houston Police Department launched an investigation. On December 27, 2016, a 17-year-old named Broderick Delance Knight was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Carias' death. Knight confessed to his role in the crime during interrogation, admitting that the car burglary gone wrong led to Carias' death. He was scheduled to appear in court on December 30, 2016.
Knight's mother, however, claimed that her son was innocent and that he did not pull the trigger. She stated that the real murderer was an acquaintance of her son. Despite this claim, Knight was the only one charged in connection with Carias' murder.
The case drew significant attention from the community and law enforcement, as it highlighted the dangers of car burglaries and the senseless loss of life that can result from such crimes. Carias' family, devastated by the loss, pleaded for justice and urged anyone with information to come forward.
