Vicki Flanery, a 63-year-old retired teacher from Houston, TX, tragically passed away on December 30, 2016. She was found dead in her home along with her 96-year-old father, Charles Morton Acker, and her husband, David Flanery. The incident was determined to be a murder-suicide. David Flanery, who was 62 years old, shot his wife and father-in-law before turning the gun on himself.
The house fire that ensued further complicated the investigation, but authorities concluded that the deaths were a result of the shootings.
The investigation revealed that David Flanery, a plumber, had been struggling with personal issues, although neighbors and acquaintances described him as a kind and helpful person. Vicki Flanery, who had previously taught high school English and history, was also known for her work in meditation and mindfulness through her company, Arise Meditation and Mindfulness. The tragic event shocked the community, as the family was known to be quiet and peaceful.
The Houston Police Department and ATF agents worked together to investigate the scene, removing ammunition and firearms from the house. Despite the extensive investigation, no suspects outside of the family were identified. The case was closed as a murder-suicide, and the community mourned the loss of the Flanery family.
