Lana Canada, a 48-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically shot and killed on April 24, 2017, in a North Dallas office building. She was a supervisor at Dignity Team Health, a Texas-based provider of in-home hospice care. Lana was married to Dennis Canada just over a month before her death, and they had a blended family of eight children and seven grandchildren.
The incident occurred when a disgruntled co-worker, 60-year-old Matthew Kempf, entered the office building and shot Lana in a
conference room. Kempf then turned the gun on himself, resulting in a murder-suicide. Witnesses reported that Kempf was upset about Lana recently being named a co-partner at the company. The police investigation revealed that Kempf knew he was going to be fired that day, which may have contributed to his actions.
The tragic event led to the evacuation of hundreds of employees from the building, and the police had to use a single shot to open a locked office door. Lana's husband, Dennis, received a text about the shooting from one of Lana's co-workers and rushed to the scene with their 16-year-old daughter. The loss of Lana has been devastating for her family, and Dennis has been left to navigate the legal and financial challenges in the aftermath of her death.
The investigation concluded that there were no other suspects involved, and the case was treated as a murder-suicide.
