Dennis Neil Johnson Sr., a 77-year-old Caucasian male, tragically lost his life on November 5, 2017, in Sutherland Springs, Texas. He was one of the 26 victims killed in the horrific mass shooting at the First Baptist Church. Dennis was a respected elder and long-time member of the church community, having served as a church elder for over a decade. He was also a veteran of both the U.S.
Navy Reserves and the Army National Guard, having served in Operation Desert Shield.
The perpetrator of the shooting was identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, a former U.S. Air Force serviceman with a history of domestic violence. Kelley was able to purchase firearms despite his criminal record due to a failure in the reporting system. On the day of the shooting, Kelley arrived at the church in a white SUV and opened fire on the congregation, killing 26 people and injuring 22 others before taking his own life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, there were numerous investigations and legal actions. The federal government was found negligent for failing to report Kelley's criminal history, and a federal judge awarded nearly a quarter-billion dollars to the victims and their families.
