David Charles Sherrard, a 37-year-old male police officer with the Richardson Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 7, 2018. Officer Sherrard was responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex on East Renner Road when he was shot by a suspect. As officers arrived on the scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound outside the apartment. The officers identified the apartment where the suspect was located and entered the premises.
Upon entry, the suspect opened fire, striking Officer Sherrard in the neck. Despite being rushed to Medical City Plano, Officer Sherrard succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, Brandon McCall, was later identified and charged with capital murder of a police officer. After a trial, McCall was convicted of capital murder on February 19, 2020. The jury sentenced him to death, acknowledging the severity of his actions and the loss suffered by Officer Sherrard's family and the community.
Officer Sherrard had served with the Richardson Police Department for 13 years and is survived by his wife and two daughters. His dedication and service to the community were remembered and honored by many who attended his memorial services and reflected on his commitment to keeping the city safe.
