On the day of her death, Nancy was shot by Marlon Smith, a 29-year-old former security guard who had been fired from the
apartment complex. Smith returned to the complex on the morning of February 27, 2018, and confronted Nancy in the office, demanding his job back. When she refused, Smith shot her and fled the scene. Nancy was found dead by off-duty officers who lived at the apartment complex.
A manhunt ensued, and Smith was later found in South Central Dallas. During a confrontation with police officers and a U.S. Marshal, Smith was shot and killed. It remains unclear whether Smith was shot by the officers or if he took his own life. Smith had a history of unlawfully carrying a weapon and marijuana possession.
Nancy's death deeply affected the community, with many residents and colleagues mourning the loss of a beloved friend and professional. Flowers and cards were left outside her home as a tribute to her memory. In honor of Nancy, her family and friends requested donations be made to the Assist the Officer Foundation, reflecting her special place in her heart for the Dallas Police Department.
