Adam Shorter, a 19-year-old male from Austin, Texas, tragically lost his life on March 6, 2018. The incident occurred near The Domain, a popular shopping area in Austin. According to reports, Adam was involved in an illegal drug transaction when he was shot. He was transported to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center with critical injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m. on the same day.
The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy and ruled the cause of death as a gunshot wound and the manner of death as homicide.
The investigation revealed that Adam and his girlfriend had driven to the parking lot of Dick's Sporting Goods at The Domain to meet with some individuals for a drug deal. Adam was driving a Lexus and had been messaging someone through an unknown app about the meeting location. Upon arrival, they parked next to a red Saturn, which Adam identified as belonging to the individuals they were meeting. The driver of the Saturn, identified as 20-year-old Devin Anthony Carmona, got into the backseat of Adam's car. After a brief exchange, Carmona pulled out a small silver handgun and demanded Adam's belongings. A gunshot was fired, and Adam was struck in the head. His girlfriend, who witnessed the incident, called 911 and attempted to dispose of a plastic container filled with marijuana.
Devin Anthony Carmona was later arrested and charged with murder and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. He confessed to the shooting but claimed that his initial plan was to rob Adam, not to kill him. Carmona was sentenced to 30 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least half of his sentence. Another individual involved in the incident, Steven Gaige Hammock, was also charged with aggravated robbery and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The investigation into Adam's death involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Austin Police Department and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Surveillance footage and witness interviews played a crucial role in identifying the suspects and piecing together the events leading up to the shooting.
