Miguel Rivera, a 54-year-old Hispanic man from Tornillo, Texas, tragically died on July 25, 2018. Rivera was shot in the head by Eduardo Garza Santillana, a former employee who had been living on Rivera's property. The incident occurred after Rivera had fired Santillana for allegedly stealing from him. Rivera's ranch hand, Abelardo Moreno, was also shot but survived the attack.
Following the shooting, Santillana stole Rivera's black Nissan pickup truck and fled the scene.
Investigators were able to locate the stolen vehicle and arrest Santillana based on inconsistencies in his story, fingerprints found on the firearm, and cellphone activity records. On February 23, 2019, Santillana was charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The case went to trial in March 2024, and after nearly six years, Santillana was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison, plus 40 years. Rivera's family expressed relief and a sense of closure after the conviction, although they acknowledged that no sentence could fully compensate for their loss.
Miguel Rivera was remembered as a loving and generous individual who was always willing to help others. His family continues to honor his memory by sharing stories and photos of him with his grandchildren.
