On the night of September 6, 2018, 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, an accountant and a dedicated volunteer, was fatally shot in his own apartment in Dallas, Texas. The tragic incident occurred when Amber Renée Guyger, an off-duty Dallas Police Department patrol officer, mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, believing it was her own. Guyger, who had just finished a 13.5-hour shift, claimed she thought Jean was a burglar and shot him in the chest.
