Omar Santamaria-Ruiz, a 33-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on October 2, 2018, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred in the master bedroom closet of the home belonging to Jordy Husein Suljanovic, a 46-year-old Bosnian refugee and long-haul truck driver. Suljanovic had installed a secret camera in his home and was monitoring it while on a trip.
Upon seeing his wife, Adriana Perez, a 41-year-old Hispanic female, and her lover, Omar Santamaria-Ruiz, together in the house, Suljanovic returned home and shot both of them, waking his children with the gunshots.
After the murders, Suljanovic and his 21-year-old son, Jordy Suljanovic Jr., transported the bodies to Louisiana. Omar Santamaria-Ruiz's body was dumped in the woods outside of Natchitoches, Louisiana, while Adriana Perez's body was disposed of near the Atchafalaya River outside Baton Rouge. Suljanovic then sold his house in Houston and fled to Mexico City with his son, two daughters, and his son's 16-year-old girlfriend. He attempted to move his family to Bosnia but was detained in London during a layover and subsequently arrested by the Houston Police Department and the FBI.
Suljanovic was charged with capital murder and, after an eight-day trial, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His son, Jordy Suljanovic Jr., pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, specifically a corpse, and received a five-year prison sentence. The case highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking justice for the victims.
