On the night of April 9, 2020, a 30-year-old man named Randy Moore was found lying in the street on the 3700 block of Aldine Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Moore was a father of three young children and, according to his family, had been released from prison just two months prior and was attempting to rebuild his life.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify Brandon Campbell, also 30 years old, as a suspect. In December 2020, Campbell was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with Moore's death. Prosecutors stated that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Campbell and Moore involving a large sum of money and a woman.
The legal proceedings against Campbell were fraught with complications. In July 2021, the murder charges against him were dismissed by a judge after prosecutors from the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office failed to appear for multiple court hearings. This led to Campbell's release from custody, sparking outrage from Randy Moore's family, who stated they had not been kept informed about the developments in the case. Following his release, at-large warrants were issued for Campbell's arrest, and the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended him later that same month.
With charges refiled, Brandon Campbell was slated to stand trial for murder. However, in February 2023, he reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
