Nathan Hayden Heidelberg, a 28-year-old male police officer with the Midland Police Department, tragically died on March 5, 2019, in Midland, Texas. Heidelberg was responding to a burglary alarm at a residence when he was shot and killed by the homeowner, David Wilson. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., and Heidelberg succumbed to his injuries later that morning at the Midland Memorial Hospital.
David Wilson, an oil company executive, claimed that he fired the fatal shot in
self-defense, believing Heidelberg was an intruder attempting to force his way into his family home. Wilson was arrested and initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was later increased to murder by a grand jury. In late 2021, Wilson was acquitted of the charges after a trial that included several communication issues and the invocation of Texas's stand-your-ground law and castle doctrine.
The case drew significant attention, and the trial was notable for being one of the largest jury pools in Midland's history. The incident also led to a COVID-19 superspreader event during jury selection, infecting not only prospective jurors but also the judge. Both Wilson and Heidelberg's family have since filed lawsuits against the alarm manufacturer and installer, claiming negligence in the communication of the alarm.
In memory of Heidelberg, the road on which the Midland police headquarters is located was renamed Nathan Heidelberg Memorial Highway. Heidelberg's family and the community continue to honor his legacy and the sacrifice he made while serving and protecting his hometown.
