Joshua Caleb Miller, a 34-year-old white male from Nederland, Texas, tragically died on May 29, 2019, from a gunshot wound to his back. He was found dead in his apartment at the Briarcliff Apartments in Nederland. The incident occurred following an altercation involving three men, including Miller. Witnesses reported that the altercation escalated, leading to at least one gunshot being fired.
Jonathan Loya, a 20-year-old male, was charged with Miller's murder.
Loya turned himself into the Nederland Police Station the day after the shooting and was subsequently charged with one count of murder. Bond was set at $250,000. Loya was identified as one of three suspects involved in the altercation and murder. The other two suspects were still at large at the time of the investigation.
The investigation revealed that Loya allegedly grabbed a gun from one of the other suspects during the altercation and went back up to Miller's apartment, where the gunshot was heard. After the shooting, Loya fled the scene in a truck, while the other two suspects left on foot. The Nederland Police Department continued to search for the remaining suspects and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The case drew significant attention due to the rarity of homicides in the area. The last homicide in Nederland had occurred the previous year, and before that, it had been about five years since the city had experienced a homicide.
