On what should have been a day of celebration, his nineteenth birthday, Jonathan Raikes of Sandston, Virginia, met a tragic and violent end. The young man was fatally shot on the evening of October 17, 2014, following a dispute at a gathering where alcohol was being consumed.
The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. at the intersection of South Confederate Avenue and West Berry Street. An altercation occurred between Raikes and Walter S.
Maybush, the father of Raikes's girlfriend, Kayla Maybush. Reports from family members indicated that the relationship between the two men was strained, as Maybush did not approve of his daughter's relationship with Raikes. The couple had a child together.
During the confrontation, Maybush shot Raikes in the face. Eyewitnesses stated that after the shooting, Maybush returned to his porch and waited for law enforcement to arrive. Henrico Police quickly apprehended him at the scene.
Maybush, who was also known as 'Steve,' was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. He was initially held at the Henrico Jail but was later transferred to the Pamunkey Regional Jail. This transfer was a precautionary measure for his safety, as some of Raikes's relatives were incarcerated at the Henrico facility. Court records indicated that a hearing for the murder charge was scheduled for December 2, 2014. This was not Maybush's first encounter with the law; he had a prior criminal history that included charges for eluding police and assault.
