On the evening of April 29, 2016, in a quiet neighborhood in Sandston, Virginia, the life of 35-year-old Shaun Bernard Johnson was tragically cut short. Johnson, a Black/African American male, was discovered inside a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 1100 block of Old Williamsburg Road, not far from Richmond International Airport. He had been fatally shot. The sound of five or six gunshots had pierced the evening air around 8:30 p.m., prompting neighbors to alert the authorities.
At the time of the incident, Johnson was visiting a friend, and there were children inside the residence.
Family members, reeling from the sudden and violent loss, described Johnson as a devoted father to his several young children and a man who 'didn't bother anybody.' His death sent shockwaves through the community, with some residents noting an increase in activity around the home in the days leading up to the shooting. The Henrico County Police quickly launched a homicide investigation, beginning the arduous process of piecing together the events that led to Johnson's untimely demise.
Several months later, the investigation led to a significant breakthrough. On August 4, 2016, authorities arrested Jarvis Bacola Williams, a 47-year-old man from Henrico County, in connection with the shooting. Following the arrest, Williams was charged with first-degree murder, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The case against Williams proceeded through the legal system, with the community and Johnson's grieving family closely following the developments, hopeful for justice and a sense of closure.
