Joseph William McCreary, a 41-year-old white male from Vidor, Texas, was found dead on October 31, 2020. The tragic incident occurred at a residence on South 22nd Street in Nederland. According to the police, McCreary was shot once with a shotgun while lying in bed. The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Grover Walker Jr., also from Nederland, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he later died.
The police believe that the incident was the result of a disagreement between McCreary and Walker, and that alcohol was involved. Two other individuals were present in the home at the time of the shootings. The case remains under investigation, but there are no other suspects.
The incident has been classified as a homicide/alleged suicide by the Nederland Police Department. Jefferson County Pct. 7 Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett conducted an inquest at the scene and described the situation as tragic and very sad. This was the first homicide in Nederland in 2020. Prior to this, the last homicide in the city occurred in May 2019, when Joshua Caleb Miller, a 34-year-old male, was shot to death at Briarcliff Apartments.
