Rigoberto Vargas, a 39-year-old man, was tragically shot and killed on June 11, 2019, in front of his apartment in southwest Houston, Texas. Vargas, who was of Hispanic ethnicity, was ambushed by an unknown assailant as he arrived home from work. His 7-year-old daughter witnessed the horrifying incident as she opened the door to greet her father. Vargas was shot three times in the back and died at the scene, in front of his daughter, common-law wife, and brother.
Another person in the apartment was also shot but survived.
The investigation into Vargas' murder revealed that the suspect had been hiding in the bushes of a nearby washateria for nearly an hour before the attack. Surveillance video captured the suspect, who was wearing a dark blue T-shirt and a gray/blue flatbill baseball hat, running from the scene. Despite extensive efforts by the Houston Police Department and Crime Stoppers, the killer has not been identified, and the case remains unsolved.
Detectives have released the surveillance footage and are seeking the public's help to identify the suspect. They believe the suspect put on blue latex gloves just before the attack, but no clear motive has been established. Vargas' brother, Jose Sarmiento, described him as a hardworking man who kept to himself and cherished his time with his family. The family continues to seek justice for Rigoberto Vargas, hoping that someone will come forward with information that could lead to an arrest.
