Sandy Michelle Cervantes, a 32-year-old woman of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost her life on June 20, 2019, in Lubbock, Texas. Her death was initially reported as a missing person case, but it later turned into a homicide investigation. The circumstances surrounding her death involved a robbery and abduction.
On the day of her death, Sandy was reportedly forced into her own vehicle by two suspects, Brandon Jay Cruz and Pablo Reyes, who had approached her and another individual,
David Rodriguez, with a gun. The suspects robbed Rodriguez, tied him up, and forced him into the trunk of his car. They then kidnapped Sandy and took her belongings, including her purse, which was later found in a dumpster in Abernathy.
Sandy's vehicle was discovered fully engulfed in flames on Cesar E. Chavez Drive on June 24, 2019, which police believed was an attempt to conceal evidence. Her remains were eventually found in an abandoned house in Hockley County on April 14, 2020. The investigation into her death was delayed, with her family reporting her missing to her probation officer in August 2019, but police did not start investigating until February 2020.
Brandon Jay Cruz, one of the suspects, was arrested in connection with a series of unrelated armed robberies in July 2019. During the investigation, police searched Cruz's apartment and found evidence linking him to Sandy's abduction. Cruz initially admitted to abducting Sandy but claimed he let her go. However, another witness told investigators that Cruz and his co-defendant, Reyes, shot Sandy. Cruz later pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case against Pablo Reyes, the other suspect, is still ongoing. Reyes was connected to the robbery and shooting of another individual, Michael McCoy, and was sentenced to prison for those crimes. The status of Reyes's case in relation to Sandy's death has not been immediately available.
Sandy Cervantes was remembered by her family as a devoted mother, aunt, and daughter. Her family expressed their grief and the irreplaceable loss they felt, stating that nothing could replace her. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings have brought some measure of justice, but her loved ones continue to mourn her loss every day.
