The DeSoto Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting and identified three suspects: Nikovian Devon Calhoun, 17, Zachary Jaheim Shelton, 17, and Jarrod Raymond Ford Jr., 18. The police believed that the suspects had planned to rob Jayden and his friend, luring them to the apartment complex under the pretense of a drug deal.
On January 29, 2020, Nikovian Devon Calhoun was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Jayden's death. During the investigation, police executed a search warrant at Calhoun's residence and found a 9mm magazine and ammunition that matched the shell casings found at the scene. Calhoun admitted that the shooting was part of a robbery attempt but downplayed his role in the incident. Detectives were able to link Zachary Shelton and Jarrod Ford to the crime as well.
Authorities continued to search for Shelton and Ford, who were still at large. The investigation revealed that the suspects had used geolocational data from Snapchat to set up the meeting and lure Jayden and his friend to the apartment complex.
