Eric Blocka Gentry, a 35-year-old male from Texarkana, Arkansas, tragically died on March 19, 2020, from multiple gunshot wounds sustained during an altercation at the Rosehill Ridge Apartments in Texarkana, Texas. The incident occurred inside an apartment where Gentry was shot by Kavante Wright, 26, of Texarkana, Texas. Officers responded to the scene and arrested Wright a few minutes later without incident.
Wright was charged with murder and booked into the Bi-State Jail.
The shooting was believed to have resulted from an argument between Gentry and Wright. According to reports, Wright surrendered to the police at the back door of the apartment, where officers found Gentry lying on the kitchen floor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate lifesaving measures, Gentry was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the subsequent investigation, Wright claimed that he acted in self-defense, believing Gentry was armed and posed a threat. The case went to trial, and in June 2021, a jury acquitted Wright of the murder charge. The defense argued that Wright was justified in using deadly force under the Castle Doctrine, which allows individuals to defend themselves against perceived threats in their own residence.
The acquittal of Wright brought an end to the legal proceedings related to Gentry's death, leaving many questions unanswered and the community grappling with the complexities of self-defense laws and the tragic loss of Eric Blocka Gentry.
