Police were called to the scene in response to a domestic violence call. The SWAT team arrived and negotiated the release of the 12-year-old son, who was able to escape the home. However, Alexica barricaded herself in a closet with Miloni. After several hours of failed negotiations, SWAT officers forced entry into the home. Alexica fired at the officers, injuring two SWAT members, before fatally shooting Miloni and then herself.
Alexica Stevenson-Gates had a history of family violence. In 2014, she was charged with assault causing injury to a family member, and in 2005, she was required to attend anger management classes after being charged with assault. Both cases were dismissed. Despite this history, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services had no prior investigations involving the family.
Miloni's father, Noland Metoyer, who is not the same man as Alexica's husband, expressed his grief and disbelief over the loss of his daughter. He described Miloni as a well-mannered and happy child who did well in school and always smiled.
The tragic murder-suicide left the community in shock and raised questions about the effectiveness of interventions in cases of domestic violence. The incident highlighted the devastating impact of family violence and the importance of providing support to those affected by it.
