The driver of the vehicle transported Pipkins to West Houston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect in the shooting was described as a heavy-set Black male with dreadlocks, driving a newer model white Mercedes Benz with dark-tinted windows. The suspect's vehicle was last seen turning southbound on Dunvale Road after the shooting.
The Houston Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Miller and Detectives M. Arrington, M. Perez, and D. Stark were assigned to the case. Despite efforts to identify the suspect, including the release of a surveillance photo showing the suspect getting into the white Mercedes Benz, the case remains unsolved. The family of Deaundra Charles Pipkins made a public plea for information at a news conference held at the HPD Edward A. Thomas Building on September 16, 2020. They urged anyone with information about the killing to provide an anonymous tip to help HPD homicide detectives identify the suspect.
