Jennifer Hickmon, a 37-year-old African American woman, was a beloved physical education teacher and coach at the Young Men's Leadership Academy at Fred F. Florence Middle School in Dallas, Texas. On July 12, 2020, her body was discovered in her home on Happy Trails Drive after her family requested a welfare check due to her unresponsiveness to calls and messages. Upon entering the residence, Dallas police found Hickmon deceased, and it was determined that she had died from homicidal violence.
The investigation quickly identified 35-year-old Jeffery Alan Scott as the primary suspect. Scott, who was Hickmon's boyfriend, was arrested on July 16, 2020, in San Marcos, Texas. During an interview with Dallas homicide detectives, Scott voluntarily admitted to killing Hickmon. He also claimed to have killed Hickmon's ex-boyfriend, although detectives were unable to locate any additional victims or verify the identity of the alleged ex-boyfriend. Scott was charged with murder and remains in custody pending his transfer to the Dallas County jail.
