Giovanna Gigi Barrera, a 24-year-old woman from San Antonio, Texas, tragically lost her life on December 9, 2020. She was killed in the 7600 block of Tarrasa after rollerskating in the area. Giovanna was approached by Daniel Calvillo and Keyana Jones, who attempted to steal her cellphone. When she refused to hand over her phone, Calvillo shot her.
The investigation led to the arrest of both Calvillo and Jones.
Calvillo was charged with capital murder and unlawfully carrying a firearm, while Jones faced charges of felony possession of a firearm. The Bexar County Grand Jury indicted Calvillo on February 26, 2021. If found guilty, he could face life in prison without parole or even the death penalty. Jones, who was believed to have been driving the getaway car, might also be charged with capital murder.
In May 2022, Daniel Calvillo took a plea deal, agreeing to a 40-year sentence for first-degree murder and an additional 10 years for aggravated robbery. The sentences will run concurrently, and Calvillo will have to serve half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Keyana Jones also agreed to a plea deal and was sentenced at a later date.
Giovanna's family has expressed their grief and frustration over the senseless loss. Her sister, Gisselle Merlos, stated that Giovanna would always be remembered as a hero for stopping someone like Calvillo from hurting other innocent people. The family agreed to the plea deal to avoid the uncertainties of a trial.
The case has been a painful reminder of the impact of violent crime on families and communities. Despite the legal proceedings, the void left by Giovanna's death remains unfilled, and her loved ones continue to mourn her loss.
