Aaliyah Paris Gradnigo, an 18-year-old African American female from Orange, Texas, tragically lost her life on January 23, 2021. Aaliyah was a vibrant young woman who had recently graduated from Parkview Baptist and was pursuing an education as a Dental Assistant at Lamar State College. She was deeply involved in her community, attending Mt. Olive Baptist Church and participating in the drill team.
Her life was cut short in a tragic incident that also claimed the life of her special friend, Thalamus Livings, 23.
On the night of January 23, 2021, Orange Police officers responded to a reported shooting at a home on Coronado Place. Upon arrival, they found Aaliyah Gradnigo and Thalamus Livings with gunshot wounds. Thalamus Livings was pronounced dead at the scene, while Aaliyah Gradnigo was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the suspect, Manka Melson, a 24-year-old male, had a history of violent crimes, including second-degree murder and armed robbery.
The investigation into the deaths of Aaliyah Gradnigo and Thalamus Livings was complex and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Detectives met with a person of interest on January 27, 2021, but could not make an arrest until forensic evidence, including DNA test results, came back from a crime lab. On April 29, 2021, Orange Police detectives, with assistance from Beaumont PD and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, served an arrest warrant for Manka Melson. He was taken into custody in Jefferson County without incident and was later arraigned as a capital murder suspect.
