Brooke Nicole Spurgeon, a 22-year-old woman from Forney, Texas, tragically passed away on February 18, 2021. She was born on June 9, 1998, in Dallas, Texas, to Michael Spurgeon and Lisa McCoy. Brooke attended North Forney High School and was actively involved in volleyball and softball. Her greatest passion was playing softball, and she was also dedicated to being a loving mother to her daughter, Charli.
On the day of her death, Brooke was found unresponsive at the Lake By Apartments in Seven Points, Texas, with a gunshot wound to the head. Christopher Nelson Hood, a 48-year-old man, was found next to her body and was on the phone with emergency services. Hood claimed that Brooke had retrieved a gun from another room, and during an attempt to wrestle it out of her hands, he accidentally shot her. However, forensic evidence and witness testimonies contradicted Hood's account.
The trial, which began on July 18 and concluded on July 24, 2023, revealed that Brooke was lying flat on the ground when she was shot. Hood was convicted of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The court heard from 27 witnesses, including Texas Ranger Michael Adcock and forensic scientists who testified that Hood had gunshot residue on his hand and Brooke's blood and DNA on the weapon. Hood was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Brooke's family and neighbors testified in court, expressing their love for her and their appreciation for the law enforcement agencies that worked tirelessly to ensure justice was served. The case involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Seven Points Police Department, Malakoff Police Department, Eustace Police Department, Tool Police Department, Gun Barrel City Police Department, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Rangers.
Brooke is remembered fondly by her family, friends, and her daughter, Charli. Her memorial service was held on February 28, 2021, at the New Hope Funeral Home in Sunnyvale, Texas. She is survived by her parents, siblings, and many other family members and friends.
