On May 25, 2021, Tevin Watson, a 29-year-old man from Houston, Texas, was tragically found shot to death inside an apartment at the 9500 block of Woodfair Drive. Watson, who was African American, was discovered with at least one gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Two children were also present in the apartment but fortunately were unharmed.
An investigation into Watson's death led the Houston Police Department to identify Qiriathiam Phillips, 25, and
Consetta Rao, 24, as the suspects. Phillips, who was out on seven felony bonds at the time, and Rao were both arrested and charged with murder. Rao was also charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon. The suspects were taken into custody on July 15, 2021, and were charged in the 339th State District Court.
The case highlighted the dangers of repeat offenders being out on bond for multiple felony charges, as Phillips was already in custody for unrelated charges when he was arrested for Watson's murder. The investigation revealed that Phillips and Rao forcibly entered Watson's apartment and shot him, leading to his death. The swift actions of the Houston Police Department and the subsequent arrests of Phillips and Rao brought some measure of justice for Watson's family and friends.
