Felipe Hernandez, a 45-year-old Hispanic male from Houston, Texas, tragically died on June 5, 2021, from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Initially, the incident was believed to be an accidental shooting. However, further investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office revealed that it was a homicide. Jose Olvera, a 29-year-old friend of Hernandez, was arrested and charged with manslaughter after admitting to accidentally shooting Hernandez while playing around with a gun.
The
incident occurred at Olvera's home in the 1450 block of Oxford Meadow Drive, north of Houston. According to Olvera, he and Hernandez had been drinking and looking at guns when Hernandez accidentally shot himself. However, Olvera later confessed to homicide investigators that he had accidentally shot Hernandez while trying to scare him with the gun. Olvera was booked into the Harris County Jail and posted a $25,000 bond.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit took over the investigation, and the case drew attention to the importance of gun safety. In response to the incident, the Harris County District Attorney's Office introduced a "Safe Gun Storage" campaign to educate the community about gun violence and gun safety.
