In the early hours of July 20, 2021, 18-year-old John Clinton, a young man from Jacksonville, Texas, was tragically shot and killed. Clinton, who had recently met 20-year-old Jesse Pawlowski on a dating app, was lured into a deadly trap under the pretense of selling a handgun. Pawlowski, along with 37-year-old Billy Phillips and 21-year-old Dylan Welch, orchestrated a plan to steal the gun from Clinton. The three men met Clinton at a trailer home in a rural area near New Summerfield, Texas.
Unbeknownst to Clinton, the meeting was a setup, and he was shot in the head by Phillips. Clinton's body was discovered in the driveway of the trailer home, where he lived with Jeff Gerla, 47, who was also found dead inside the home along with Ami Hickey, 39, and Amanda Bain, 39. All three victims had been shot to death.
The investigation revealed that Pawlowski, Phillips, and Welch had planned the robbery and murder. Pawlowski had visited Gerla's residence multiple times and knew about the firearms, including the handgun Clinton wanted to sell for $500. On the night of the murder, Pawlowski texted Phillips to come to the residence to steal the handgun. When Phillips and Welch arrived, Pawlowski and Clinton walked to the end of the driveway to meet them. Phillips took the gun from Clinton and shot him in the back of the head. The three men then entered the residence, where Phillips shot Gerla, Bain, and Hickey. They stole two shotguns from the residence and a 2017 red Dodge Challenger, which was later reported stolen by Jacqueline Gerla, Jeff Gerla's mother.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, along with Texas Rangers, conducted a thorough investigation, collecting numerous items of potential evidence, including firearms and digital photographs. The three suspects were arrested and charged with capital murder. The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office decided not to seek the death penalty for Welch, but it remained an option for Pawlowski and Phillips. All three men have been held in the Cherokee County Jail since July 22, 2021, with bonds set at $1 million each. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and no future court dates have been set at this time.
