The incident occurred in the early morning hours when Guzman called 9-1-1 to report an intruder breaking into her apartment. When first responders arrived, they found Guzman unresponsive on the floor with a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Travis County Medical Examiner's office conducted an autopsy and ruled the cause of death as a gunshot wound, classifying it as a homicide. The Austin Police Department launched an investigation into the case, appealing to the public for any information or video footage related to the incident. They also offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
On September 17, 2021, the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force arrested 28-year-old Arlun Raythunda Watford in Conroe, Texas, in connection with Guzman's murder. Watford was charged with first-degree murder and held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $75,000 bond. The arrest marked a significant development in the case, providing some measure of justice for Guzman and her loved ones.
