Ajay Stewart, a 21-year-old black man, was fatally shot Friday, July 20, near Anaheim Street and Ohio Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Two groups of men were near the intersection when they became involved in an altercation about 7:30 p.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.
During the confrontation, one person pulled out a gun and began shooting at the other group. At that point, Stewart was shot, officials said.
He was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition, later dying from several gunshot wounds, authorities said.
There is no description of the shooter, although the incident is being investigated as gang-related.

Charges were filed yesterday, December 12, against two gang members for their involvement in the 2012 murder 21-year-old Long Beach Ajay Steward, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
On July 20 of 2012, a shooting occurred near Ohio Ave. and Anaheim St. in Central Long Beach around 7:30PM. When Long Beach police officers arrived, they discovered Steward had been shot multiple times in the torso. The victim was transferred to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
At the time, no motive had been uncovered though detectives had learned that Steward was part of two groups of males who had confronted each other.
As of yesterday, 24-year-old Jorge Armando Samniego and 25-year-old Gustavo Castaneda Garcia, both of Long Beach and already in-custody on unrelated charges, were charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Gang and gun enhancements were added, worsening their sentence if convicted.
